CHAPTER THIRTEEN

OLIVIA

There was a reason I didn't like going to big gyms, and the interaction with the man on the treadmill and Jonah made me that much more resolved to never step foot in one again. As we walked at a brisk pace, I side-eyed Jonah, who looked like someone had kicked his puppy.

Had another man talking to me triggered him that much?

I started the SUV and turned to say something to him when I spotted the man in question nearly careening into a car that wasn't watching what they were doing.

"He's following us." I locked the door and pulled forward out of the space since no one had parked in front of me.

"It's Lucas." Jonah kept his eyes on the rearview mirror as I turned out of the parking lot and headed in the direction of his house.

"No way." Of course, we'd looked the firefighter up the day before, but there hadn't been any pictures of him, which was odd considering he was an attractive man and was young. He had to have social media because… who didn't?

Besides a few more directions to get back on the road to Jonah's house, it was silent in the SUV, both of us lost in our thoughts. Jonah kept his eyes on the rearview mirror, his jaw set with worry.

I was worried too, but I was also trying to be cautiously optimistic. There was only so much hope I could allow myself to have, and with a prophecy being so vague and alluding to enemies, obstacles, blood, and bravery, I was wondering if I was strong enough to even get through whatever was thrown my way.

Added to the uncertainty was the question of how my mom had gotten the dagger after my dad had taken it. And why me? Maybe it was fate or it was something I should really worry about.

I had broken into a house and stolen a necklace from a safe. The reason for it was yet to be seen.

I turned into Jonah's driveway and pulled up to the house. A hot shower and a nap were calling my name.

It was barely ten in the
